Google Search Console is a free tool that shows how your shop performs in Google search. Submitting your sitemap helps Google find every page on your shop and index them faster.
Before you start
You need a custom domain. Free shop links can't be submitted to Search Console. See Connecting a custom domain.
Step 1 — Find your sitemap URL
Go to Dashboard → Shop and scroll to the Search Engines section. Look for the Sitemap URL field. It looks something like:
https://yourshop.com/sitemap.xml
Tap the copy button. The sitemap is generated automatically — it lists every product, category, page, and blog post on your shop, and updates whenever you add or change content.
Step 2 — Add your domain to Search Console
Go to search.google.com/search-console. Click Add property and choose URL prefix (this is the simpler option). Enter your shop's full URL with https://, e.g. https://yourshop.com.
Step 3 — Verify ownership
Google offers several verification methods. The easiest is the HTML tag:
- Google shows you a small meta tag
- Copy it
- In your shop, go to Dashboard → Shop → Verification Codes → Google and paste it
- Save
- Back in Search Console, click Verify
See Verifying your domain for more detail.
Step 4 — Submit your sitemap
Once verified, in Search Console go to Sitemaps in the left menu. Paste the path part of your sitemap URL (e.g. sitemap.xml) and click Submit. Google will start crawling within a few hours.
What you'll see over time
After a few days, Search Console shows you:
- Performance — how many people see your shop in search results, what they search for, and which pages they click
- Coverage — which pages Google has indexed (and any errors)
- Mobile usability — whether your shop works well on phones
Tips
- Don't expect overnight results. SEO takes weeks to months.
- Check the Performance report monthly. The keywords customers use to find you are valuable for product names and blog post ideas.
- If you see "Coverage errors", they usually fix themselves once Google re-crawls. Persistent errors are worth investigating.
